“If you think something is ugly, look harder.
Ugliness is just a failure of seeing.”
~ Matt Haig: The Humans (2013)
What do you consider ugly? Why do you consider it ugly? Is it different, uncomfortable, not ‘normal’? Is it misshapen, foreign, or simply unfamiliar? Is the evaluation based on an emotional response? Anti-credo? Jarring to the sense of sight, taste, smell? What is ‘ugly’ ?? I recall a comment from kidhood “Ugly is as ugly does.” This was attached to behaviors ~ someone acting in an insensitive and disregarding-of-another manner. Thanks to Haig’s quote, I realized looking back, that many things (and people, places, events) that I judged initially as ugly, were in fact, upon consideration, quite unique, and sometimes beautiful, in their own right. For their own purpose. Maybe not my purpose ~ yet definitely theirs. Maybe not my purpose ~ at the time. And maybe ~ upon reflection ……. hmmm.
For those who look in a mirror and see ugly … for those who continue to judge themselves over actions in the past … for those who project upon others … for those that are afraid of what appears to threaten: stand back, breathe, and … look again. What are you failing to see? {Psst… the next step … what are you failing to understand?}
Be willing to look. See. Gain clarity, and knowledge.
